Abstract

The 2007-09 global financial crisis and recession were caused by the current free-market form of globalisation. That crisis, and the subsequent decade of austerity, left society and the economy ill-equipped to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. What we need now is to abandon that ‘capitalism unleashed’ form of globalisation, and instead develop and implement industrial and regional strategies to create an alternative, socially and environmentally sustainable form of development around a global Green New Deal. Such strategies could deliver immediate benefits — and would also help create the potential for transformative change over the longer term, to create a socially and environmentally sustainable future.
