Abstract
Industry is one of the main sources ofpollution of ambient air as well as of water, both surface and ground. India represents a wide cross-section of industries in terms of size, manufacturing processes and product range. Small scale industries (SSIs) are a special feature of the Indian economy; India has over 3 million small scale units. Though SSIs account for over 40 per cent of the industrial output in value terms, it is estimated that the pollution generated by them is more than their share of industrial production. Ludhiana has a strong economic base due to high industrialisation of small and medium industries; it is appropriately known as the Manchester of India. On account of various reasons the location of the industry has not been well planned; many of the small scale units are located in residential areas. This paper seeks to analyse the effectiveness of various preventive and promotional pollution control measures initiated by the Government in relation to small scale industries in Ludhiana city.
