Abstract

In the present study Rivanol and Prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α) have been compared, in respect to time factors and complications, when using the extra-amniotic technique for induction of second trimester abortion. The study covered 250 cases of legal abortion. The Rivanol method was found to be safe, easy to handle and accompanied by a favourably low complication rate. PGF 2α had a more rapid abortifacient effect than Rivanol and induced significantly more abortions within the first 24 hours, but the technique made greater demands on the hospital staff. In the PGF 2α group, the induction-abortion times were shorter, but the method was associated with relatively high incidence of complications. Judging from the results in this comparative study, it may be questioned whether the extra-amniotic PGF 2α method in its present form is preferable to the Rivanol method.
