Abstract

This review presents a summary and evaluation of the various techniques used in the production of physical dependence on ethanol in animals. The procedures for induction of the major withdrawal signs are classified according to the route of ethanol administration designed to circumvent the animals' inherent aversion to the taste of ethanol. Although it is possible to design an animal model of physical dependence on ethanol, the critical determinants of the process of alcoholism remain unknown.
