The observations reported above are consistent with the conclusion that ADPRT activity is essential to the induction of ODC, and further, that the constitutive level of ADPRT, before induction of ADPRT, is essential in early cellular events leading to the induction of ODC. However, the actions of nicotinamide and of benzamide are not confined to the inhibition of ADPRT these compounds have also been shown to inhibit proteinases, and to inhibit the formation of superoxide anion by human neutrophils (Troll et al., 1987). How these functions might relate to the induction of ODC is under investigation.
