Abstract

Groups of CBA/H mice were exposed to 239PuO2 by inhalation to give a range of initial alveolar deposits of 20-1660 Bq. They were killed 34 days later and free lung cells recovered by broncho-alveolar lavage. Differential cell counts were made on recovered cells and, in addition, the incidences of alveolar macrophages (AM) with aberrant nuclei and with mitotic figures were scored. The dose-response relationships for the various types of aberrant AM (micronucleate cells, binucleate cells and cells with both types of aberration) are derived. Information on the 239Pu labelling index of AM is presented, and on its distribution in normal labelled AM and in labelled AM with aberrant nuclei.
