Abstract

Treatment of guinea pigs with diphenylhydantoin or phenobarbital for several days causes a marked increase in the activity of an enzyme system in liver microsomes that 6β-hydroxylates cortisol. This effect offers an explanation for the previously reported observation indicating an increased urinary excretion of 6-hydroxycortisol in humans treated with diphenylhydantoin or phenobarbital.
