Abstract

The magnetic transition from the exchange-modulated collinear to the noncollinear state in terbium manganate, accompanied by the appearance of electric polarization, is explained within the Landau theory of phase transitions. The experimentally observed reorientation or disappearance of electric polarization in magnetic fields along the Y and Z axes are explained by the spin-flop transitions of manganese spins from the incommensurate noncollinear to the commensurate magnetic phase.
