Abstract

Airway epithelial cells differentiate into a pool of myofibroblasts which contributes to airway remodeling. Myofibroblasts are able to invade and migrate outside the epithelium, augmenting subepithelial fibrosis and leading to airway remodeling. Differentiation of epithelial cells into myofibroblasts occurs though epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). EMT involves a loss in E-cadherin with an increase in mesenchymal markers such as vimentin and N-cadherin. An atopic individual is most often allergic to multiple allergens.
