Abstract

Summary(1) Prolonged irradiation of portions of bean Ieaves with U.V. radiation of 2537 Å results in (a) the development of chlorosis in adjacent non‐irradiated portions of such leaves and (b) pronounced histological changes in epidermal and sub‐epidermal layers of irradiated areas.(2) Induction of chlorosis is not associated with gross cell damage of non‐irradiated tissues, but appears to be due to a specific effect on chlorophyll synthesis.(3) Some evidence is presented for the production of a diffusible water‐soluble material by irradiated leaf portions which is responsible for the induction of chlorosis in adjacent portions of leaves not exposed to U.V.(4) The variety of responses of chloroplasts to U.V. irradiation is discussed.
