Abstract

Basal applications of plant growth regulators to excised roots of Ophioglossum induce modifications in the outer cortical cells. Benzyladenine initiates periclinal divisions in these outer cells producing a ‘periderm-like’ tissue while 2,4-D causes cell enlargement only. Walls of the outer cells of the ‘periderm-like’ tissue are resistant to sulphuric acid and stain with Sudan IV and presumably are suberized.
