Abstract

Abstract Rainbow sharks and redtail black sharks, both cyprinids, were induced to spawn with combination injections of either carp pituitary extract plus human chorionic gonadotropin or reserpme plus luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analog (LHRH-A; des-gly10[D-ala6] LHRH ethylamide). Fish injected only with LHRH-A did not spawn, suggesting that a gonadotropin-release inhibitory factor (GRIF) may be present. Reserpine injections prior to the LHRH-A injections apparently had an inhibitory effect on the GRIF. Both injection schemes are suitable and can be used to spawn rainbow and redtail black sharks.
