Abstract

The ferroelectric phase transition in γ-irradiated triglycine selenate single crystals was investigated, using the Differential Scanning Calorimeter technique. It is shown that small doses of γ-irradiation (up to one mega Rad) change the critical behaviour of the specific heat, C, (for zero electric field), and can change the type of the phase transition. The effect is described within the theory proposed by Levanjuk and others (A.P. Levanjuk, V.V. Osipov, AS. Sigov and A.A. Sobianin, Sov. Phys. -JETF, 76, 345, 1979). The larger doses of γ-irradiation result in progressive smearing of the anomalous phase transition. The density of point defects arising after γ-irradiation increased with the increase of the irradiation dose. The vicinity of the transition to the tricritical point and the dose dependence of Landau expansion coefficients are considered.
