Abstract

Induction of ovarian maturation and spawning in greasyback shrimp, Metapenaeus ensis, by progesterone was investigated under tank culture conditions. More advanced stages of ovarian development, stages III, IV and V, were observed after 1 month in the shrimp injected with progesterone (0.1 μg/g body weight) compared to controls (pure ethanol 0.1 μl/g body weight) which showed only the early development stage II. Two of fifteen females injected with progesterone spawned nocturnally 30 and 31 days after injection.
