Abstract

When hovering, the rhinoceros beetle, Strategus sp., produces a downstream wake pattern such that the induced velocity peak value occurs close to the body. Implicit are large radial inflows at the flapping plane. Such a pattern contrasts greatly with classic helicopter, propeller, and assumed insect induced velocity distributions.
