Abstract
Extensive indoor air research has been established in Finland (population 5 million), mainly during the last ten years. Simultaneously, several training and education programs has been launched in this field. The main actors in this progress have been the research teams in Helsinki and Kuopio. The former consists mainly of the researchers in Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) and State Research Centre (VTT) and it works in close collaboration with the Finnish Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (FISIAQ). The latter includes the researchers in University of Kuopio and its hospital as well as in the units of the national Public Health Institute (NPHI) and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) in Kuopio. Both research agglomerates have a lot of cooperation. In addition, the main unit of the Institute of Occupational Health in Helsinki has provided training in indoor air quality problems at workplaces. Most recently, the university hospitals in Helsinki and Kuopio have established indoor air clinics for people who suspect to suffer from building-related illnesses. These clinics also provide basic information about these issues for their patients.
