Abstract
Iskandar J, Iskandar BS. 2015. Benefit of various birds in the song-bird contest and its impact to bird conservation in nature: A case study in Bandung, West Java. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1: 747-752. This paper discussed the result of ethnoornithology study about the local knowledge about various contest songbird species, bird-keeping practice, songbird contest activity and its impact on the bird conservation in nature based on a case study undertaken in Bandung, West Java. The method that applied in this research was a mixed between the qualitative and the quantitative methods. The result of the study showed that there were 14 bird species of 8 families that been commonly entertained in the songbird contests. They consisted of 11 bird species that categorized as native birds and three bird species as bird import origin. The influence of more popular songbird contests activity had caused of more popular bird keeping hobby and bird trading in Bandung urban area. Positively, the songbird contests have developed various knowledge of people about the birds, such as various bird species or races, bird behavior, bird song, bird keeping and bird breeding, especially to bird species that commonly to be contested. In addition, by undertaking regular songbird contests have stimulated the development of local economic and industry activities in relation to the song-bird keeping hobby, such as an industry of bird cage, feeding, vitamin, and medicines. However, the songbird contests have also negatively impact on the bird conservation in nature. The songbird contests activity and bird trading in the urban area have caused of uncontrolled bird hunting and catching in the village areas. Consequently, the population of some songbird species has become very rare and a high risk to be extinct in nature due to over-exploitation for the bird trading in the urban area. Therefore, to obtain a sustainable benefit of songbird species, the bird conservation efforts based on the local community participation are urgently needed.
