Abstract

3-Substituted indoles react with 2,4-dinitrophenylsulfenyl chloride to give 2-(2′,4′-dinitrophenylthio)-3-indolyl derivatives. Compounds of this type were prepared from 13 naturally occurring indoles and it was shown that these derivatives are useful, in many cases, as an aid in the isolation, chromatographic separation, and identification by infrared and mass spectroscopy and melting points. The indoles can be regenerated from most derivatives by desulfuration with Raney nickel.
