Abstract

The INDO method has been used to calculate the 13C and β-proton coupling constants of some carboxyl anion radicals. It is concluded that the deviation from planarity in these radicals is approximately 6°. It is proposed that these radicals constitute models for the formation of tetrahedral intermediates in addition reactions of a nucleophile to a carbonyl group.
