Abstract

. While traditional prognostic factors, such as tumor extent and size, typically dictate the choice of therapy and its intensity, in recent years, additional powerful prog-nostic factors have emerged that can add to our ability to individualize therapy. In addition, new treatment modalities, including new chemotherapeutic agents and strategies for using chemotherapy, new targeted treatments and new radiotherapy treatment modalities, such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), pro-vide us with means to tailor treatment to these prognostic factors. This editorial will concentrate on recently recognized specific prognostic factors for oropharyngeal can-cer (OPC), and on new radiotherapy tech-niques, as examples of the need, as well as the ability, to individualize therapy of head and neck cancer.
