Abstract

A one-page, two-sided questionnaire (see Appendix) was mailed in September 1986, to 1772 foreign language department chairpersons of four-year colleges and universities within the United States. Names and addresses were taken from the September, 1985, Directory of the Modern Language Association of America. The mailing included a personally signed cover letter and a postage-free return envelope. Although most of the 766 surveys completed were returned by the requested 15 October deadline, questionnaires continued to arrive as late as March, yielding an overall return rate of fortythree percent. Responses were tabulated and frequencies obtained using the data-based software program Dataease and a Zenith 158 personal computer with a converted IBM hard disk drive.
