• IBMs for a protected bird species in the context of EIA • EIA was done for Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, Europe's largest infrastructure project. • Tunnel construction had no effect on Common Eider population. • Effects were visible only when the number of individuals unrealistically high. • IBMs are identified as powerful but underused tools for EIAs.
