Abstract

SUMMARYThe following topics were reviewed in the first part of the paper on the assumption that the aspects of infant behavior of greatest psychological relevance are those that affect his interaction with the environment:1) State, 2) Perception, 3) Habituation and learning, 4) Reflexes and spontaneous behavior and 5) Reaction to stimuli. The interaction of the infant with his environment was then discussed in terms of the infant's behavioral dispositions, first with regard to the impact of the environment upon the infant and then with regard to the infant's influence upon his environment. Finally the present assessment methods and their lack of concern for the behavior characteristics of the child were considered in order to investigate the possibilities of introducing the concept of «style» to the clinical examination of the infant.
