Abstract

Accurate measurement of SO 2 emissions from stationary combustion sources has been a problem over the years. A remaining unresolved question is whether SO 2 emissions can be calculated satisfactorily with limited measurements of related parameters. Another equally important question concerns the field use accuracy of a current reference method and the development of an equivalent method for practical application. This report presents a brief description of the indirect method based on elemental balances of fuel analysis and SO 2 /CO relations in the determination of SO 2 in stack gases. The theory of this method is illustrated by a fundamental combustion equation with examples of application. The results of this study show that the indirect method of SO 2 determination is simple, low cost, accurate, and reliable.
