Abstract

Three-dimensional Peierls transition in BaPbxBi1−xO3 opens the energy gap, and the top of the valence band and the minimum of the conduction band would be the L-and W-points, respectively on the Brillouin-zone surface. We have found the indirect-excition absorption in which the indirect-gap energy coincides with twice of the activation energy of the resistivity. With increasing the Pb content, the gap energy as well as the exciton binding energy decrease.
