Abstract
A simple and rapid method for determining the asbestos concentration in particulate matter in the atmosphere and on roads was investigated using pyrolysis-gas chromatography. Monitoring of the asbestos concentration in the suspended particulate matter along roads and in the accumulated particulate matter on roads was carried out. The correlation of asbestos concentration in both particulate matter samples has been studied. The asbestos contents in the suspended and accumulated particulate matter were 5.27–26.4 mg g −1 dust and 0.104–0.662 mg g −1 dust, respectively, and the concentration of asbestos in the atmosphere was 2.26–7.02 μg m −3. The correlation coefficient between the asbestos concentration in the atmosphere and the asbestos contents in the accumulated particles was 0.793, whereas the correlation coefficient between the asbestos content in the atmosphere and in the accumulated particles was 0.739.
