Abstract

Estimates of the endogenous renin in the plasma or serum of normal human and dog, published from various laboratories in terms of "plasma renin activity ", are unsuitable for comparison, because, due to technical differences, values differ widely (0·35 to 10·4 ng. angiotensin per ml. per hour). By reference to pure angiotensin and to an internationally acceptable standard preparation of renin, in Goldblatt units (GU), it has become possible to tabulate in uniform terms, for comparison, the results of seventeen published assay procedures. The lower limits of sensitivity—i.e., the concentration of renin required to generate angiotensin at a rate of 0·5 ng. per ml. per hour—in the various procedures ranged from 0·26 × 10-5 to 6·2 × 10-5 GU per ml.
