Abstract

The importance, relevance, and value of spirituality and notions of the spirit have existed for Māori, the Indigenous Peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand, since time immemorial. While colonization brought many and varied influences, impacts, and marginalization for Māori, notions of spirituality continue to flourish in contemporary Māori society. Furthermore, these notions have become widespread among non-Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand, such that they have served as catalysts for flourishing and resilience in recent times, in the face of natural hazards, terrorist attacks, and pandemics. Beginning with an overview of Indigenous Māori spirituality and notions of the spirit, this chapter explains how these notions have infiltrated contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand society in powerfully transformative ways.
