Abstract
A system of spectral and energetic indices based on pulsations is proposed (taking into account the achievements of hydromagnetic diagnostics). The principle of the proposed system is to ascribe to each index a clear physical meaning. Due to the fact that the connection of pulsation properties with the structure and dynamics of the magnetosphere has a stochastical character, special attention is drawn to the necessity of utilizing a complex of surface observations in formation of these indices. This principle is illustrated on the example of the ≻ index, characterising the degree of contraction of the magnetosphere by the solar wind. The perspective of presenting the results of diagnostics in the form of indices is discussed. It is stressed that only the practice of long-term exploitation of an index can answer the question of its utility.
