Abstract

Abstract This chapter elaborates on the 'rediscovery' in European policy analysis of high nature value (HNV) farming. Three approaches for the selection of indicators for HNV farming systems are identified, and indicators are defined for each of them. Indicators are defined (i) for environmentally protected areas, (ii) based on species and habitat management requirements, and (iii) for the identification of low-intensity farming systems. It is suggested that pragmatic approaches of using existing information sources may be preferred for defining HNV farming systems more precisely.
