Abstract
The birth ball allows women to move freely and provides pain relief during labor. Although it is used by the care team, there are neither records nor criteria for its application. This qualitative research case study aimed to know the indication and implications of the use of the birth ball among nurses and pregnant women during labor. Participants were 16 women and 6 nurses, and two data collection strategies were used: naturalistic observation and semi-structured interviews. From the thematic analysis two themes regarding the use of the ball emerged: indication and implications. Prescription by nurses had pain relief as the main reason for women to use the ball in the early active phase of labor. Women and nurses reported that the use of the ball contributed to pain relief. It was also noticed that the use of the birth ball contributed to labor evolution.

Summary
RESUMO A bola obstétrica permite à mulher liberdade de posição e alívio da dor durante o trabalho de parto. Na prática da atenção obstétrica, a bola obstétrica é utilizada pela equipe que cuida da mulher durante o processo de parturição(8), porém não existem critérios de elegibilidade para seu uso, nem registros da influência de sua aplicação no trabalho de parto, e são escassos os relatos científicos sobre esse tema. O estudo teve como objetivo conhecer as indicações e as repercussões do uso da bola obstétrica por mulheres em trabalho de parto e entre as enfermeiras que indicaram tal uso. As entrevistas com as enfermeiras e as mulheres foram realizadas com a finalidade de obter o aprofundamento necessário para a unidade de análise do estudo de caso, através dos relatos dos próprios sujeitos que indicaram e utilizaram esse método não farmacológico. As participantes que integraram o estudo assinaram um termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido, atendendo às diretrizes e normas da Resolução n.o 196/96 do Conselho Nacional de Saúde(11)
