Abstract

A primary sleep disorder should be considered when there is a qualitative or quantitative sleep deficit or excess sleep. In this protocol, we will review the evaluation of patients with sleep disorders, which starts with a case history and physical examination with the use of generic or specific questionnaires and additional objective tests. In all cases, the medical history is the pillar of the initial evaluation of patients. Although polysomnography is the fundamental diagnostic test in sleep medicine, there are others performed in the hospital (multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness test), at the patient's home (actigraphy, polygraphy), or through biochemical analysis (melatonin test, determination of hypocretin in cerebrospinal fluid). In any case, knowing their methodology, indications, and limitations is essential for reaching a correct diagnosis.
