Abstract

India’s goals in Afghanistan are calibrated to balance domestic, regional, and global interests. The main objective of Delhi in Afghanistan is to prevent Pakistani-backed extremists from launching attacks on Indian soil or against Indian interests. Both India and Pakistan want to keep Afghanistan stable so that they can get energy from Central Asia. India has a variety of ways to further its interests in Afghanistan. Aside from pursuing political and economic influence in Kabul, Delhi seeks to win Afghan hearts and minds by offering massive development assistance and projecting its considerable “soft power”. India aspires to impact regional developments and project power by playing a major role in Afghanistan’s security and economic growth. The only way India has not imposed its will on Afghanistan is militarily. Indians increasingly believe that strengthening India’s involvement in Afghanistan will help India strategically.
