Abstract

This chapter attempts to understand the causes of the resurgence of the Taliban and the regional security concerns as a consequence of this resurgence. It seeks to highlight the political and regional dynamics that have sustained the Taliban and prolonged the war in Afghanistan. The chapter focuses specifically on India's security concerns arising from the ongoing and prospective developments in Afghanistan. It has been widely reported in the international media that the Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan was made possible by direct support from operatives in Pakistan's military intelligence agencies. The resurgence of the Taliban poses two primary security challenges Islamic extremism and narcotics trafficking. The resurgence of the Taliban revived regional criminal networks. The end of the Cold War complicated India's security environment. It has increased the levels of violence and terrorism within India. The rise of the Taliban, supported by Pakistan, added to the deteriorating security environment.
