Abstract

The Indian construction industry is the second-largest employer in the country, behind only agriculture; employs more than 35 million people and is currently valued at over USD 126 billion. The Indian construction sector has experienced growth but has also experienced the challenge of attracting required private investment and completing projects successfully. The shortage of talent in the construction sector is a long-term problem and will continue to push up project costs and risks. Construction education and training programs have an additional but very important responsibility of estimating and scaling the necessary competencies in upcoming construction professionals by updating the academic curriculum to make it best fit the construction work of the future. This chapter discusses the initiatives of the government for skill development in the construction sector. The Department of Information Technology supports the construction industry and the government by establishing frameworks for e-governance and administration.
