Abstract

SITTING IN FRONT OF JOURNALists and industry representatives, Indian Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers Sukhdev S. Dhindsa listened silently as leaders of the Indian Chemical Manufacturers Association (ICMA) stated that unless the government implements fundamental changes in laws and taxes, there is no way India's chemical industry can remain competitive as import tariffs on chemicals keep coming down. It looked like an ambush, but, surprisingly, when the minister spoke, he mostly agreed with ICMA. The occasion for the meeting in Mumbai on March 23 was the official release of a report about the prospects of the Indian chemical industry by an ICMA task force.
