Abstract

AbstractIndian textile & Handicrafts industry constitutes an important segment of the Indian economy as it is one of the largest employment generators after agriculture in rural India, which constitute close to 70% of land and over 72% of population. The Indian textile and Handicrafts sector employs about seven million people directly and indirectly, which include a large number of women and people belonging to the weaker sections of the society. Urbanization pushed the population to manufacturing, service and construction sector, thus leaving the women of the house to explore means of generating income to survive. With migration of labour slowing down and in some cases reverse migration from cities to villages witnessed over the last year, creating employment opportunities in rural India has been the priority of the Central and State governments.The paper explores the opportunities created by the entrepreneurial mindset of Indian artisans over past decade and its impact on standard of living in rural India.
