Abstract

After tracing the evolution of the postwar ‘liberal order’, the chapter critically evaluates the position of the EU and India on four critical elements of the liberal order—stance on a rules-based order and multilateralism, approach to free trade and globalization, the promotion of democracy and human rights, as well as non-proliferation. In conclusion, the author argues that while India and EU have similar approaches towards many global issues, structural and ideological differences tend to hinder cooperation and that while the two may not be ideal partners in preserving the liberal order they are indispensable for its reforms.
