Abstract

IN FEBRUARY 1962 nearly 114,000,000 voters took part in India's third general elections since independence. A new parliament was elected along with thirteen state assemblies.* In the parliamentary election the Congress Party was again returned to power with 353 seats compared to 132 for the opposition. In 1957 Congress won 371 seats and in 1952, 363. In the recent elections to the state assemblies, Congress won a clear majority in every state except Madhya Pradesh, but experienced sharp setbacks in Rajasthan (where Congress won with a majority of one), Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Bengal, however, Congress improved its previous position.
