Abstract
An index of quilt patterns is usually just an index of the pattern names. This article describes a method of categorizing quilt patterns based on how the basic block has been designed. There are five main categories defined with some additional categories. While this method has been used to categorize quilt patterns the same idea can apply to other crafts that use geometric design such as quilting, stained glass, mosaics, needlepoint, jewellery, weaving and woodwork. This method has been used by Jinny Beyer in her book Patchwork patterns and on her website to group the quilt pattern. This method is not only useful for indexing quilts but the way it forces you to look at patterns in a different way has greater application.
