Indexing of Journals

Abstract

Indexation of a journal is considered as a reflection of its quality. Indexed journals are considered to be of higher scientific quality as compared to non-indexed journals, because a journal is indexed by indexing data base authorities only after careful and extensive reviewing process. Further, indexing will help a journal to achieve wider accessibility to the audience and simultaneously improve the reputation of the journal as a reliable source of high-quality information in the relevant field of study. There are number of abstracting and indexing services available throw-out the world. Some are affiliated with institutions such as AGRICOLA maintained by the United States National Library of Agriculture and TEEAL maintained by the Albert R Mann Library of the Cornell University, USA while some are provided by publishers such as Scopus by Elsevier and SCIE by Thomson Reuters. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is an online directory that indexes to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals. Today most of the indexing data bases such as AGORA request the indexing of DOAJ as a prerequisite for indexing in their data bases. However today there is a discussion among scholars and researchers which indexation is best and most valid? How to compare the quality of articles published in journals indexed with different indexation services? First, importance of publication of indexed journals is being increasingly recognized by the universities and academic institutions. Second, recently many more indexation services have come up. Are these indexations services equally valid and recognized? Would a journal indexed with any of these databases be considered “indexed”? I would like to open this to discussion among the research community. Currently the JAS has been included in more than 35 journal databases including AGRICOLA, AGORA, Cabi Abstracts, TEEL and DOAJ. It shows the wider acceptance of JAS by international citations and journal databases. This is an indicator for our progress in journal quality during past years.
