Abstract
Inequalities in health have long been recognised, researched and documented. In 1842, Chadwick’s report on the sanitary conditions of the labouring population recorded a life expectancy of 45 years for ‘gentlemen and persons engaged in professions and their families’ in Bethnal Green, east London, compared with 16 years for ‘mechanics, labourers, servants and their families’. Conditions, such poor housing, overcrowding and sanitation were cited.
