Abstract

The author, who is in charge of the section of the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt, which produces the standard bibliography of official West German publications, describes the library's function as a depository of official publications produced at all levels of government. She outlines the manner in which the Index of Official Publications (Verzeichnis amtlicher Druckschriften) is compiled and its form of arrangement. Plans for automating its preparation are briefly dealt with. Difficulties in the changeover from a manual system using its own rules of entry, to an automated one using rules based on the international cataloguing code, are mentioned with some weaknesses in the latter being pinpointed. The article concludes by briefly surveying the subscribers of the Index and their attitude to proposed changes in its form.
