Abstract
This index presents a list of medieval author names and texts that occur in the book titled Marriage Advice for a Pope. Pope John XXII (1316-34) has had the misfortune of being remembered primarily through the writings of his critics. John XXII had asked his theologians and lawyers to explain a loophole in the medieval theory of marriage. The Church taught that marriage was indissoluble and that consent, not consummation, made a marriage. John XXII's consultation seemed to supply a missing link in the evolution of medieval marriage theory, between the twelfth century when popes legislated that consent 'made' a marriage and the fifteenth century when popes began to dissolve marriages based on consent alone.Keywords: Marriage Advice for a Pope; medieval marriage theory; Pope John XXII
