Abstract

Index crimes are a series of eight crimes – murder and nonnegligent homicide, forcible rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, larceny‐theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson – about which police agencies report to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They have been an important source of information about crime for more then three‐quarters of a century. They are also an important part of a larger crime reporting program called the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR).
