Abstract

Design of living units for the elderly can include consideration for individual differences as well as economy of construction. Compromises between preferences of the household and cost may need to be made, but such compromises should be weighted in terms of users' needs. Interview data on household activities, storage needs, and housing preferences of 174 households are a basis for design criteria explored in this research. For those designing, remodeling, or selecting living units, application of such findings can promote independence in housing one or two elderly persons.
