Abstract

In a in Suddeutsche Zeitung interview of 21 January 1997 the British sociologist and the Prime Minister's intimate counsellor Anthony Giddens prophesied that in the near future Scotland will gain full autonomy from England. The Scottish Nationalists would have been delighted, though their demand is not only autonomy but a sovereign Scottish state as a member of the European Union. In this article I do not want to deal with the question whether Scotland's independence could be an answer to the present problems of the country. My interest is to deal with the issue of independence with regard to British, European and international law.
