Abstract
AbstractAn inexpensive, manually operated soil sampler has been developed for determining profiles of bulk density and water content in the top 10 cm of rod‐weeded summer‐fallowed soil. This sampler is especially suitable for sampling 1‐cm increments of loose dry soil overlying a firm soil at a 10‐ to 20‐cm depth. Field data obtained with this sampler showed true variations in soil moisture and bulk density with respect to depth and time even at depths of < 2 cm. Thus it is possible to estimate soil heat capacity over the whole 0‐ to 40‐cm profile.
