Abstract

Object-oriented data warehouses store integrated information as object-oriented materialized views and are well suited for integrating data from modern heterogeneous data sources. Previous work on incremental maintenance of materialized views in data warehouses is confined to the relational setting. Although recently incremental maintenance of object-oriented views has been investigated, the proposed view maintenance algorithms do not work in a warehousing environment. In this paper, we study incremental maintenance of object-oriented views in data warehouses. In particular, we focus on two primary issues. First, we identify which kinds of updates to which classes may cause changes to an object-oriented view. Then, we propose an algorithm that can incrementally maintain an object-oriented view derived from multiple distributed data sources. A prototype system has been implemented and the result of a preliminary performance evaluation shows that our incremental view maintenance algorithm is correct and efficient.
