Abstract

A new method of burning natural gas in shaft furnaces has been proposed and tested under industrial conditions at the Zlatoust Metallurgical Plant. The method is based on incomplete combustion of the gas (air consumption coefficient e = 0.5-0.6) in portable cylindrical burners lined with refractory brick and having a high degree of airtightness. Under these conditions, the increase in flue-gas volume at 1250-1350~ increases the exhaust velocity. Thus, the capacity of the gas--air mixture to penetrate into the thickness of the limestone is increased by a factor of 2-2.5. The quantity of air required for complete combustion of the combustion products is introduced into the cooling zone by means of a highpressure forced-draft fan. The furnaces are equipped with automatic temperature monitoring devices.
